  • Assist zone owner in achieving compartment plan approval.

Key Accountabilities

  • Liaise with external agencies (the customer, approval authorities & subcontractors) to deliver Surface Ships outputs and the wider project milestones on schedule.

  • This role sits within the aviation function and while some knowledge of aviation is desirable, it is not essential. This position will be primarily focused on the Platform design, integration of aviation systems within the hangar and mission bay and other relevant locations.
  • The role holder will cover functional, physical and engineering integration of the platform systems into the ship and an understanding of the factors influencing the design intent of those systems as the programme progresses through detail design, into build and commissioning.

This role will provide you with the chance to work on a wide variety of projects gaining and developing a deeper understanding of security risks and mitigations.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to perform tasks suitable to the internal level of this role. The role will contain, but will not be limited to, the following:

– Working closely with security stakeholders from both the business and the customer communities throughout the whole project lifecycle and at all classifications, in particular with the SAC and Accreditor to achieve and maintain system accreditation

– Providing cyber security advice and guidance to systems and software engineers, including at a detailed technical level. You should be able to provide detailed guidance on, for example, operating system lockdowns and data-in-transit protection

– Providing cyber security advice and guidance to managers and solution architects to identify and propose architectures, develop secure designs and identify and implement security controls which provide proportionate risk reduction

What we are Looking for

Essential:

– Systems or software engineering background, able to interact at a technical level with systems, software and hardware engineers

– Demonstrable experience of identifying cyber security risks using a recognised methodology and the commensurate controls and mitigations required to manage those risks.

– Ability to articulate security advice directly to key stakeholders within both the business and the customer community

– Experience of cyber security engineering delivery and accreditation, preferably within the Defence domain.

– Degree qualified in Information/Cyber Security, IT, Engineering, Mathematics, or Science, or alternatively equivalent qualifications and/or experience.

Desirable:

– Experience in secure communications, secure networking and the appropriate use of cryptography

The holder of this position is responsible for the day to day project control activities for the Type 26 Support project and the associated Australian and Canadian contracts, reporting to the Type 26 Support Programme & Governance Manager. This includes planning, Earned Value based tracking, reporting, reviewing and baseline change across the Maritime Services and Naval Ships toolsets, providing support and challenge to the Support management team and the wider Type 26 programme.

Lead Project Controller

The holder of this position is responsible for the day to day project control activities for the Type 26 Support project and the associated Australian and Canadian contracts, reporting to the Type 26 Support Programme & Governance Manager.

This includes planning, Earned Value based tracking, reporting, reviewing and baseline change across the Maritime Services and Naval Ships toolsets, providing support and challenge to the Support management team and the wider Type 26 programme.

They also organise the annual Phase Review and undertake activities to improve how the project is managed.

The UK Type 26 programme is in the Batch 1 Manufacturing phase for the build of 3 ships, with the Batch 2 extension for 5 further ships anticipated by the end of 2022. This would bring the Support budget to c.£350M.The Australian and Canadian programmes are in the preliminary design phase.

Understand and Applies a depth of expertise relating to an engineering domain (a sub set of a discipline) to assist with engineering problems, challenges issues and problems associated with the area. Assist with Designs and develops solutions, resolves engineering issues and problems for a range of situations relating to their discipline area. Provides technical assistance to others relating to their specialized disciple area.

Core Activities

  • Assist with the development of effective energy and low carbon solutions (generate, recycle, storage, monitor & control) in the form of feasibility studies and business cases through to detailed design and installation. For example, PV, CHP, low carbon heat networks, heating systems, battery storage, hydrogen, carbon capture and energy management systems.
  • Help with cross-discipline oversight of design development, for both products and projects.
  • Assist with design management and integration of sub-contractor products, systems and solutions
  • Generate new ideas and collaborate with our R&D team to develop new energy & carbon reduction products

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist with under taking technical reviews, verifications and validate engineering designs.
  • Help Develop new products to increase the portfolio of works the E&SS can provide to others.
  • Provide technical Support for senior engineers.
  • Providing support and assurance to the Design Authority as to the adequacy and robustness of the Safety Case and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with Undertake functional design and/or provide qualification and evidence for acceptance, fitness for purpose, legislative requirements, and safety.
  • Assist the Liaising process with both internal and external stakeholders as required ensuring that their requirements are adequately supported and that their needs are fully considered and incorporated where appropriate and agreed.
  • Providing support with the identification and management of continuous improvement initiatives in both business processes and project activities
  • Supporting the delivery of engineering governance activities including Design Reviews and audits
  • Supporting resolution of cross-discipline technical issues

Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge gained through professional qualification and including substantial work experience. HNC/ HND level qualification and working towards EngTech/IEng level.
  • Have knowledge in Energy systems and products. Requires understanding of either Mechanical/Electrical engineering discipline for projects and programs.
  • Good understanding of Engineering integration: across projects, products and strategy.

Senior Project Engineer

Position Description

This is a role for an experienced Project Engineer to act with a degree of autonomy in delivering engineering support to operational projects; this includes the line management of Project Engineers within their respective Engineering Support teams. The intention of this role is to further develop a Project Engineer both in terms of technical exposure and management caliber in preparation for a PEM or equivalent Engineering role within the business.

  • Responsible for supporting the Project Engineering Manager (PEM) to ensure that the service delivered in the relevant project is safe and delivers a functional engineering product.
  • Support PEM by reviewing of the integrity of work instructions during project planning, responding to engineering queries during project delivery within design intent and ensuring the integrity of the overarching engineering governance.

Core Duties

  1. During project delivery, resolve production queries as quickly as practicable within safety / design intent. The role will include the need to carry out engineering calculations, investigate and resolve engineering and maintenance support issues, and to support Ops, COMs and Project Management functions in the delivery of ship projects or programmes. Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and PEMs delegated authority (within Design Intent).
  2. During project planning, review all work in conjunction with ship’s staff, COM and Ops to ensure that it contains sufficient engineering content, appropriate levels of acceptance and assurance and that product safety / quality considerations have been incorporated into the Project Haz ID / Quality Scope.
  3. Support the PEM in maintaining engineering oversight, providing engineering governance, assurance and facilitating Warship Support to ensure overall quality and integrity of production work in addition to formal quality related events.
  4. Line Management of Project Engineers within their respective Engineering Support teams.
  5. Support in the application of mandated MOD safety and environmental systems, BAE Systems Engineering Governance, Product Safety & associated Frameworks
  6. To have involvement in the development of necessary PSEMPs and project hazard Logs in support of the Maritime Product Safety Framework. Support regular HAZID and attend Risk and opportunity reviews, supporting the engagement of relevant stakeholders as required.
  7. Assist in maintaining functional and governance interfaces with Alliance partners (such as, but not limited to – SCAs, Safety & Environmental Protection team (SEP) within D Ships, Babcock) and COMs.
  8. Support Production Teams to aid in the application of requirements and standards to ensure they are fully understood and met.
  9. Support the developing, maintaining and modifying engineering processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need.
  10. Support the development of best practice to increase the capability, performance of tools and processes.
  11. To support the PEM with the Life Cycle Management of a project or programme to ensure the project delivers against the mandated BAE Systems LCM policy
  12. Under the oversight of the PEM act as a focus for Engineering Activity within the relevant area of the business ensuring the correct delegated levels of authority are engaged,
  13. Work with the COM to investigate and manage changes to A&A Guidance through all phases of project lifecycles.

Functional Knowledge

  • Experience of repair, maintenance and integration of ships systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of design support activities with ability to conduct engineering calculations, technical investigation and report writing in support of tasking requirements.
  • Degree in appropriate Engineering discipline.
  • Member of appropriate Engineering Institute working towards Chartered status
  • Understanding of constructive, mechanical, and/or electrical systems within a naval / maritime environment.

Business Expertise

  • Understands how own activities fit in with activities of Engineering Team
  • Some understanding of the development of naval ships, and the procurement of marine systems, materials and equipment.
  • Can apply the relevant Business processes to developing their outputs.

Leadership

  • Responsible for self and quality and timeliness of delivery of own work

  • Mentors Project Engineers, providing advice and guidance on requirements, policies, standards and processes
