Senior Software Engineer x 9

The purpose of the role is to perform Software Design, Development, Documentation, Integration and Test activities within various project teams in Training Services Group (TSG) working on complex systems.

The applicant will be capable of working with a high degree of technical autonomy, providing technical guidance to others relating to software engineering.

Applies depth and breadth of knowledge relating to software engineering in order to resolve the most complex challenges, issues and faults associated with installation, commissioning, operation and performance in the software discipline or technical area.


  • Designing, reviewing, developing, testing, documenting, configuring and delivering software products to the agreed standards and procedures using the specified tools, within schedule and estimates.
  • Resolve the most complex challenges, issues and faults associated with installation, commissioning, operation and performance of systems.
  • Provide specialist technical advice and guidance to other professionals, technician engineers and/or customers, and works with a high degree of technical autonomy.
  • Testing software products sufficiently to ensure software product quality is maintained and minimal or no re-work is required.
  • Investigating and resolving obsolescence issues and problems raised during any stage of the development lifecycle, including software and system integration, qualification, and in-service trials.
  • Production of appropriate technical documentation.
  • Communicating effectively, identifying early potential risks, seeking clarification and providing feedback to team members and leadership.
  • Ensuring that a good working knowledge of, and adherence to, Training Services software related processes, software development practices and product deliverables.
  • Supporting team members and leadership with relevant estimation of development activities.
  • Delivers work to a high standard.


  • BEng/BSc in Computer Science or similar software qualification.
  • CEng or equivalent level of capability, or working towards CEng status.
  • Extensive knowledge of programming languages, C, C# and ADA highly desirable.
  • Experience with all phases of the software development lifecycle.
  • Experience of UML or similar high level design methodology.
  • Excellent software coding, integration and testing skills.
  • Experience of configuration control systems.
  • Knowledge and experience with COTS hardware, and interface standards, including networks, switch and router configuration, and WAN protocols.
  • Experience of virtualization infrastructure and technologies desirable.
  • Knowledge of management of deployed systems, security, account management and automated software deployment desirable.
