Senior Aviation Engineer

Platform Engineer for the Frigate programme responsible for the
integration of platform equipment and systems within the ships hangar and mission
bay. This will cover all aspects of the operational, functional and physical/engineering
for the hangar and mission bay including, but not limited to: capital platform
equipment and hangar maintenance and helicopter handling systems.

Core Activities

  • Design and integration of Aviation systems within the major design zones that includes the hangar and mission bay.
  • Functional integration of the platform equipment and systems within the ship, including but not limited to aviation, air weapons, combat systems, auxiliary systems, etc.
  • Incorporation of Engineering changes to supporting systems and services.
  • Design input to across the DZ for the ZX process gates.
  • Facilitate coherence and problem solving of system design and integration issues with the design zone.
  • Production and review of design documentation such as TESs, SOWs, design documents, safety documents and assessment of supplier’s reports.
  • Development of whole ship operating procedures and identification and implementation of resulting changes on the platform design. Including launch, recovery, handling, weapons, emergency scenarios, communications, tactical integration, refuelling and maintenance.
  • Attend and present at Steering and Working Groups as required.
  • Assist in planning and execution of the process and trials required for acceptance and clearance.
  • Liaison with external authorities for acceptance, certification and operational approval.
  • Assist in the maintenance of design intent through spatial integration and in to commissioning / build, including approval / authorisation of engineering documents and change requests, overseeing of design intent reviews etc.
  • Assist zone owner in achieving compartment plan approval.

Key Accountabilities

  • Liaise with external agencies (the customer, approval authorities & subcontractors) to deliver Surface Ships outputs and the wider project milestones on schedule.
  • Demonstrate potential and contribute to the project and the business.
  • Assist compartment owner with responsibility for Aviation compartments and other disciplines.
  • Preferred role location is Glasgow, but other locations such as Portsmouth and Bristol will be considered.
  • Role will involve frequent local travel and some overseas travel.
  • This role sits within the aviation function and while some knowledge of aviation is desirable, it is not essential. This position will be primarily focused on the Platform design, integration of aviation systems within the hangar and mission bay and other relevant locations.
  • The role holder will cover functional, physical and engineering integration of the platform systems into the ship and an understanding of the factors influencing the design intent of those systems as the programme progresses through detail design, into build and commissioning.
  • CAD and 3D modelling skills are desirable.
  • The role holder should work effectively, with minimum supervision and show sound understanding of budget constraints and schedule milestones.
  • Ability to quickly assimilate engineering data and define solutions and opportunities.
  • Good problem solver.
  • Self-checks all own work prior to its release.

  • Ideally degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Incorporated Engineer or working towards status is desirable.
  • Experience in previous Platform Engineering design roles desirable.Experience with Ship aviation design is desirable.
  • Experience with CAD software like AutoCAD or FORAN is desirable.
  • Possesses good knowledge of most aspects within current discipline
  • Able to perform analysis using recognised analytical tools and to make sound judgements
  • Has sufficient capability to be able to make correct trade-off decisions
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to management and peers.
  • Displays flexibility through response to radical changes.
  • Strong understanding of Detail Design Requirements as immediate customer in Engineering Lifecycle
