Product Safety Engineer

Role Summary

We have an exciting new contract opportunity that is primarily remote, but will require occasional travel to either Cowes, Broadoak and Great Baddow

The role will be an initial 6-month contract and will provide you with the opportunity to work on product safety management systems for Naval Warships in the Defence industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide credible advice and guidance to the project team on product safety, COSHH and other occupational safety issues, ensuring that safety considerations are an integral part of the design process and taking cognisance of the whole product lifecycle.
  • Support the cultivation of Safety Arguments for all products and services delivered by the project, employing all required facets of the Product Safety Lifecycle as defined in the project SMP and in accordance with the Product Safety Policy;
  • Be capable of resolving a range of product safety engineering issues and problems in developed technologies with a high degree of technical autonomy, compiling technical reports and accompanying presentations.
  • Ensure Product Safety Case documentation is maintained as required to support design assurance.
  • Ensure project compliance with UK and International Legislation in particular, but not limited to, compliance with DSA02 and other MoD procedures.
  • Keep up to date with Safety legislation and advise projects, and where appropriate the business, of compliance requirements.
  • Manage own scheduled work with some technical direction to meet target time scales and budget demands.
  • Be seen as ahighly experienced engineer, and in a Product Safety context be seen as a source of knowledge and a point of contact across both external (customer and supply chain) and internal (SDAs, DAs, PEMs etc) stakeholder communities for the products they are supporting.
  • Champion the cause of Product Safety compliance.
  • Maintain technical knowledge in the field of Product Safety and proactively keep abreast of industry initiatives/updates (seeking and sharing good practice and knowledge to continuously improve practices), and supply technical support and expertise to others as required.
  • Assist in identify training and development requirements and skills gaps of design engineers within the field of Product Safety.
  • Be expected to contribute to the Business’ policy and culture of continuous process improvement, in particular extant Safety process improvement initiatives.

Be responsible for the maintenance of extant Safety Management Systems as set out in Project Safety Management Plans.

Key skills & qualifications

  • Have a demonstrable and successful track record of delivering Product Safety tasks within a marine and complex systems environment.
  • Hold acknowledged competency in the specialised field of Product Safety Engineering, confirmed by competence assessment; maintaining a competency profile in accordance with applicable, defined business processes;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of working within a Product Safety Management System (PSMS). Some knowledge of improving or tailoring a PSMS.
  • Have a good understanding and demonstrable experience of application of a range of common established Safety management tools, techniques and practices.
  • Have a good understanding of industry and MoD Safety management tools and processes.
  • Hold relevant knowledge of applicable legislation and standards (e.g. HASAW, COSHH, REACh, BS EN 61508, Def Stan 00-056, Def Stan 00-055 etc.).
  • Hold knowledge and understanding of incident and accident management systems in use across the organisation and the importance of any underlying datasets.
  • Be a recognised member of a relevant industry wide body, e.g. SCSC, SaRS, IET, IMechE etc.
  • Hold Engineering/Systems/Safety qualifications that support IEng status;
  • Hold IEng or is working towards IEng status (or equivalent) to gain registration in the short-term;
  • Be Ship Safety and Environmental Management Training (SEMT) qualified (or its predecessors SSMO/SSMT) or have the ability to gain the qualification in the short-term.
  • Be PC literate, with good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook.

No position specific functional knowledge expected beyond that listed above.

Rate: 76.58 per hour (inside IR35)
